Should College Essays Have a Word Limit?
As an independent college counselor, I think the word limit on the Common Application essay is a good idea. I feel that colleges will take more time to read shorter essays than they will long ones. I also believe that students should be able to tell their stories in 500 words or less. I have had students say to me, "I can't make this any shorter," when they have shown me their essay. They have amazed themselves when they managed to cut out 125 words to stay under the 500 word limit. The word limit makes students write more concisely and I think this improves most college essays.
